About the Lessons & Tasks:
During each lesson, students will work as a class to answer a math question. During the task part of the lesson, students will work individually, in pairs, or in small groups to apply the same problem and record their thinking.
Themes:
- Lesson 1 - Tooth Fairy for a Day: Students count bags of "teeth" and answer your choice of math questions. They will either count the sets and, as a class, compare & order them from least to greatest/greatest to least OR they will count 2 sets and add them together to get the sum. They use manipulative for teeth (your choice between marshmallows, provided "teeth" counters, or other math tools in your classroom), and represent their work on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers. This lesson also includes a Tens and Ones Counting Mat so students have the option to figure out how many groups of tens and leftover ones there are when counting.
- Lesson 2 - Valentine's Day Candy Boxes: Students count boxes of candy hearts and answer your choice of math questions. They'll either count sets and compare (least to greatest/greatest to least) OR count 2 sets of hearts and add together to get the sum. This is a similar lesson to Lesson 1 so that you can focus on specific similar skills. For example: during lesson 1, students order least to greatest or add number combinations to 5. During lesson 2, students order greatest to least or add number combinations to 10. This lesson also includes a Tens and Ones Counting Mat so students have the option to figure out how many groups of tens and leftover ones there are when counting.
- Lesson 3 - Cupcake Shop: Students purchase orders from a cupcake shop by reading the cost of the cupcake and counting coins to pay with that amount. They'll represent their payment on a recording sheet with pictures and/or numbers. This lesson has provided costs and blank order cards so you can add your own cupcake costs for students.
