Body Systems and Organ – Fetal Pig Dissection
This product comes with two versions of the Fetal Pig Dissection Lab: 1 paper model version, and 1 normal version (which would require you to purchase fetal pigs). It also comes with an answer key, and links to annotated videos of the dissection.
In this activity NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) aligned activity, students (Part 1:) complete a quick matching section for 11 organ systems, (Part 2:) Determine the gender of the pig, and age of the pig by extrapolating on a graph. (Part 3:) Then, students identify 25 organs of the pig by either building a paper dissecting model, or using the real thing. Either way, annotated videos are included to help students through the process. (Part 4:) Students describe the function of major organs, and (Part 5): Answer post lab application questions.
A. NEXT GENERATION SCIENCE STANDARDS HEREIN
DCI’s: LS1.A Structure and Function
LS1.B Growth and Development of Organisms
Cross Cutting Concepts: Cause and Effect, Systems and System Models, Structure and Function, Scale, Proportion, and Quantity
Scientific and Engineering Practices:

Analyzing and Interpreting Data
Using Mathematics and Computations Thinking
B. SUGGESTED USES
Prior Knowledge: No specific prior knowledge is required. However, my product, a stations activity on organs and systems, can help students learn the structures and functions.
Materials and Setup: If you are doing the paper dissection, then you will need this download, internet access, tape or glue, scissors, and colored pencils. If you prefer to do the actual fetal pig dissection, then you will need to order fetal pigs as well.
Time Frame/Implementation: If you do the real dissection, students must take proper safety precautions, such as:
1. Wearing protecting gloves, eyewear, and lab coat
2. Proper use of dissecting tools
3. Proper handling of preserved organisms
4. Proper disposal of preserved organisms
5. All other lab safety protocols
6. My students cling wrap their phones and watch the dissection videos while they dissect
