Plan your writing instruction for the entire year with this writing scope and sequence for fifth grade. This scope and sequence includes 5 writing units that are aligned to Common Core writing standards for fifth grade: (1) Intro to Writing; (2) Personal Narrative; (3) Realistic Fiction; (4) Informational Writing; (5) Opinion/Persuasive Writing.

UNITS INCLUDED:

This scope and sequence includes 5 writing units that are aligned to CCSS:

  • Unit 1: Introduction to Writing
    This 2-week unit includes 10 lessons that introduce students to “writing workshop”, the “6 traits of writing”, and the “writing process” as they write a narrative about a topic of their choice. 
  • Unit 2 : Personal Narrative
    This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 personal narratives. 
  • Unit 3: Realistic Fiction
    This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 realistic fiction narratives. 
  • Unit 4: Informational Writing
    This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 informational reports. 
  • Unit 5: Opinion/Persuasive Writing
    This 7-week unit includes 35 lessons that guide students through the writing process for 2 opinion essays.
