Description

This First Day of School Math Activity is a fun way to get to know your students and to make a quick informal assessment on where they are at with basic math facts. Students make a class picture graph of some of their favorite things, making this First Day of School Math Activity interactive and engaging for students.

There are 3 different versions, so you can continue these First Day of School Activities during the first week of school or later on in the school year when you are teaching about graphs and data.

These 3 versions include:

✏️favorite school subject

favorite fruit

favorite dessert

These Math Activities for the First Day of School follow the data and measurement standards for 1st and 2nd grade.

Here's what's included on this First Day of School Math Activity:

  • Teacher Directions - so you can get started right away
  • Title Pages - these are given in a question. For example, "What is your favorite subject in school?"
  • Option cards - these are what students color for the picture graph
  • Category labels - save time printing these out rather than writing the categories on the board.
  • Worksheets where students convert the class picture graph into a bar graph. The worksheets also have questions students have to answer these about the data. I like to display this worksheet up on the whiteboard and complete it with students.

Check the preview for more details. I hope you love this First Day of School Math Activity in your classroom!

Our first day of school was on a Wednesday. I used this math activity each day of the week to review data collection and analysis. The kids loved it and it was a good activity to get them talking about themselves and seeing what they had in common. You may have to change your collected data. I had lots of the kids loving strawberries but there's only enough room on the graph to record 10 votes for each choice. We just removed 5 of the votes for strawberries before recording and analyzing.
