Included in the Reading: Literature packet:

*Asking Questions: Read the story and create comprehension questions for a classmate to answer.
*Read and Answer: Read the story and answer the comprehension questions.
*Retelling a Story: Read the story, put in in order, and tell the moral of the story.
*Characters: Name characters you know that have certain characteristics.
*Characters and Setting: Read the story and draw a picture of the setting and characters.
*Setting: Describe the settings of some familiar stories.
*Words for My Sense: Write words that appeal to each of the five senses.
*Fact or Fiction: Read descriptions of books and tell if they are fact or fiction.
*Point of View: Goldilocks and the Three Bears: Read the story and tell who is talking at certain points.

*Comparing Characters: Compare and contrast familiar characters.
*Poetry: Read four poems about the seasons.

*Chick Lifecycle Report – List the facts you learned from the text and facts you learned from the diagram.

*Key Ideas: Camping (Comprehension) – Use the picture and text to recall and describe key ideas.
*Identifying Reasons: Read a passage about caring for Earth and make a word web to identify the author’s reasons.

Included in the Writing packet:

Opinion, Informative (including How-To), and Narrative writing are all addressed in a simple step-by-step approach that allows students to brainstorm, make outlines, and write pieces on a variety of topics. Students are also given opportunities to proofread and improve their pieces.

The following sheets are included for each writing piece:

*Blank “Time to Brainstorm/Research/Think” Sheets: Students are given time to think about their writing and get as much information down as possible. They may use drawings, labels, lists and/or diagrams to begin their piece.
*Outlines: The next step involves writing an outline. Two types of outlines are included (one that simply includes a topic sentence, three events/steps/facts/reasons, and a concluding sentence, and another that includes these, along with space for details about each event/step/fact/reason).
*Final Copy: The students then use their outline to write their piece.
*Proofreading Checklist: Students use the checklist to check and improve their writing.

For each type of writing, blank forms are included for topics of your choice. Two writing prompts (for each writing type) are also included:

Opinion Writing: Should Recess Be Longer?, Who is the Best Superhero?
Informative Writing: All About Bugs, All About Space
How-To Writing: How to Make a Taco, How to Ride a Bike
Narrative Writing: Our Field Trip, My Vacation
This packet also includes a sheet of ideas for digital writing as well as a How-To Writing collaborative project.
Two completed outlines are included to use as examples.

Included in the Speaking and Listening packet:

*Collaborative Conversations Checklist: Observe students during a class discussion and make a check mark each time a student is observed listening when others speak, participating in the discussion, responding to others’ comments, asking questions, or staying on topic.
*Classroom Discussion Rules: A poster of rules for students to follow during classroom discussions.
*The Best Pet to Get, Our Favorite Holidays, The Best Part of First Grade: Students engage in different discussions with their classmates, then record their classmates’ thoughts and their responses to these thoughts.
*My Questions: After a group discussion students record what they would like to know more about, anything they didn’t understand, and any questions they still have.
*Read Aloud Key Details (Fiction and Non-Fiction): After being read a story or non-fiction text students record main ideas and key details.
*Guest Speaker Follow Up: After a guest speaker, students record their favorite part, what they would like to know more about, and any questions they may have.
*People, Places, and Things (3): Students write descriptive sentences for different people, places, and things.
*My Best Day Ever, My Worst Day Ever, My Vacation: Students write descriptive sentences and include drawings and labels to describe certain events, as well as their thoughts and feelings about the events.
*Building Sentences: Students fill in the missing nouns and verbs to build silly sentences.

*Printing Letters: Practice printing upper and lower case letters.
*Sorting Nouns: Sort common, proper, and possessive nouns.
*Matching Nouns and Verbs: Choose the correct singular or plural noun or verb to complete each sentence.
*Pronouns: Circle the pronouns in each sentence.
*Pronouns 2: Replace the nouns in each sentence with pronouns.
*Past, Present, and Future: Write a sentence three ways.
*Adjectives: Replace the adjective with a new adjective.
*Conjunctions: Circle the conjunction in each sentence.
*Determiners: Choose the correct determiner to complete each sentence.
*Preposition: Choose the correct proposition to complete each sentence.
*Finish It (2): Complete each sentence, make it exciting!
*Sorting Sentences: Sort sentences by their type.
*Proofreading Practice: Circle the mistakes in a passage and rewrite it.
*Capitalization: Circle the words that should be capitalized, rewrite the sentence.
*Coloring Capitals: Color the words that should be capitalized.
*Punctuation and Capitalization: Correct the capitalization and punctuation in each sentence.
*Missing Commas: Add the missing commas to each sentence.
*Spelling (2): Spell the words phonetically.
*Spelling Sight Words: Practice spelling sight words.
*Word Sort: Sort words by how they are spelled.
*Word Meaning: Use clues from the sentence to draw a picture to match a given word.
*Affixes: Add affixes to root words to create new words.
*Root Words: Write a root word with three different inflections.
*Sort Words: Sort words by category.
*Which One Doesn’t Belong: Choose the word that does not belong in the category.
*Making Connections: Draw a picture to show how a word makes you feel.
*Act It Out: Act out given words.
*Draw It: Use drawings to show a word’s shades of meaning.
*Because: Connect two sentence parts with the word because.
*Quote Me: What do these Dr. Seuss quotes mean to you?

Each worksheet contains the Common Core Standard it addresses clearly printed at the top of the page. I have found this incredibly useful in helping parents to understand the concepts being taught. Clear directions are printed at the bottom of each page. All Language Standards for First Grade are addressed.
