This is great for morning work when the students walk in the door on the first day of school!
As they enter the room, have a small tub of Playdoh on each student's desk. Let them know that they can create anything they would like with that Playdoh. It's a great way to help relieve the stress of the first day and help them feel comfortable!
After giving them time to make a creation from their Playdoh, have them write a story about their creation. I give them very little instruction besides telling them to make sure they have a beginning, middle, and end.
This is what I use as their very first writing sample! At the end of the year, you could have them do the same thing and have a side by side comparison!
