Description

Whether you're starting to organize a brand new classroom library or your classroom library has been collecting dust (it happens to the best of us!), this Fixer Upper style library makeover is the best way to get kids involved and talking books.

This project can be done over the course of several days, or packed into a day's work. You can divide the class into teams to complete the work, or select some activities to have all students work on, choosing the best designs and ideas for the library.

This project's purpose is to get kids interested in the books in your classroom library, but it also supports technology and math goals.

So get your hard hats ready, because here's how the project will go:

DEMO DAY! Students will take out the books (yes, this part is messy!), they'll dust shelves, reorganize, and come up with new categories for special book bins and featured books. They may also work on book recommendations while they're at it! The room is sure to be a buzz about books.

Jo's Design Team: This team will work on a new layout design for the library, surveying the class and addressing any issues with the library. Is there a place to check out books? Recommend books? Return books?

Chip's Construction Crew: Works with the design team to create a featured book display.

Jimmy Don's Sign Crew: Creates new labels for special book bins and posters with quotes about reading.

Magnolia Buying Team: Uses a real or imagined budget to shop for new items for the library within the "all-in budget".

Camera Crew: This group decides how you'll document the process, interviewing teams along the way to show the process. Don't forget the before & after photos!

SILO-bration Party Planners: Whether you actually invite parents & other adults in for cupcakes, or you're planning an imaginary celebration, creating a menu of cupcakes is a ton of fun! Either way, be sure to give kids a chance to explore the new library with a day to check out books and try out seating.

*Includes worksheets for each team & tips for how to use technology (mostly Google) if they'd like to complete the task digitally.

I can't wait to hear what you think! Please send along any pictures if you happen to take them. My kids loved dressing up as Chip & Joanna!
