Float My Boat
Description
How does the shape and size of a boat affect the amount of cargo it can carry? In the inquiry lab, students will build simple boats to float gram blocks in a shallow pan of water. In this lesson students will start with the same raw materials and come up with a wide variety of results in the use of density and the displacement of water.

Objectives
Matter and Energy 1 Standard 5 (A) Density, Ability to sink or float
Process Standards 2 (A) plan and implement investigations
2 (B) measure and collect data
2 (D) analyze and interpret patterns to construct explanations
4 (A) collect, record, and analyze information
The student uses a variety of measurements to compare and contrast the physical properties of matter.
