Description

Build automaticity with short vowel words using structured, repeated fluency grids designed for meaningful CVC fluency practice.

If your students can decode CVC words but still read slowly, guess, or lack confidence, they don’t need more worksheets. They need accurate, repeated practice.

These CVC fluency grids provide systematic repetition with both real CVC words and CVC nonsense words so students strengthen decoding and improve oral reading fluency.

Why You’ll Love These Fluency Grids

Fluency develops through accuracy first. Each grid includes the same six CVC words repeated in different orders across rows. That repetition strengthens phoneme-grapheme connections and builds automaticity without overwhelming students. Because nonsense words are included, students must attend to every sound.

These grids are simple, consistent, and effective for:

  • Building automaticity with short vowels
  • Strengthening decoding of CVC nonsense words
  • Improving oral reading fluency
  • Supporting intervention and RTI
  • Monitoring student progress with built-in assessment sheets

What’s Included

  • 9 fluency grids for each short vowel sound (45 total grids)
  • For each vowel sound:
    • 5 pages of real CVC words
    • 2 pages of CVC nonsense words
    • 2 pages of mixed real and nonsense words
  • 45 teacher assessment sheets for tracking accuracy
  • Clickable table of contents for easy navigation

The assessment sheets allow you to tally correct words, mark errors, and track growth over time with minimal prep.

How to Use

Fluency grids should be used after students have been explicitly taught the sounds and can decode and blend CVC words.

  1. Provide a grid.
  2. Have students read across each row.
  3. Track accuracy or time for oral reading fluency practice.
  4. Repeat on different days to build speed and confidence.

Use these during:

  • Small group instruction
  • Literacy centers
  • Intervention groups
  • Whole group fluency warm-ups (project the PDF on your screen)
  • Progress monitoring sessions

Print and go!
