Description

***UPDATED*** Lots of changes including an answer key and QR codes!

The purpose of this resource is to provide you and your students with appropriate, engaging practice, and assessment opportunities.

This originally was a literacy center that needed to be printed, laminated, cut, etc.--very tedious. I didn’t want to take that element away because many teachers still enjoy preparing their centers for students! However, now this activity has been adapted to be a printable which significantly reduces prep time--while still maintaining rigor. I also added QR codes for students to self check.

As a Literacy Center

Print in color, laminate, and cut the headers/board and cards. There are two levels available:

Book Titles
Reading Passages

Students take turns picking up a card from the stack, then read the text. Students will discuss and determine the author’s purpose. Finally, the card should be placed in the correct pile (persuade, inform, entertain).

As a Printable

Print pages 16-18 and duplicate them. On Page 16, students search the room, their desk, home, library, etc. and record the titles of books in the correct category. On pages 17-18, students will cut and paste to sort the book titles or passages into categories; persuade, inform, or entertain.

OTHER WAYS TO USE THIS RESOURCE:
Interactive bulletin board
Reteach/Extra practice with peer tutor or aide
Send home as homework practice/game
Slip into page protector and use dry erase marker to write answer
Cut the cards and sort on a foldable
Give each child a card and practice with cooperative learning strategies

I used this resource for teaching my 11th-grade students with intellectual disabilities. Many of their IEP goals included understanding the author's purpose. This was really helpful for them because it was on their reading and comprehension levels.
