Description

Learn all about force and motion through hands-on science activities! First, set up your science center with all of the force and motion vocabulary cards you will need, each with photographs to bring the words to life.

Next, set up a ramp exploration center. One ramp will have different textures (cardboard, bubble wrap, and felt) for students to explore friction, while the other set of ramps will be low, medium, and high for kids to explore gravity. There are even ribbons to award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners to work on those ordinal numbers.

The next force to explore is magnets! First, hunt around the room to find objects that are magnetic using magnetic wands and draw pictures of the items you find. Then, sort small magnetic and non-magnetic items onto the sorting mat. Next, find your way through the magnet mazes by using a magnet under a table or box to move through the maze on the top. Finally, try and make a car move without touching it (by repelling magnets).

Following that, set up a push or pull sorting activity using the mats provided. And then, sort objects by whether they roll or slide.

Finally, learn all about directions through movement cards that can be done with scarves, ribbons, or even magic wands. Last, play an escape game that focuses on up, down, left, and right (all color-coded to make this easy for all learners).

Your little ones won't even realize that they are learning with all of these hands-on force and motion science activities!

Here's what you'll get (in color):

  • force and motion vocabulary cards (force, motion, friction, gravity, push, pull, magnet, bounce, back, forth, up, down, around, zigzag, roll, slide)
  • Directions poster
  • Directions: Can you escape? grid game with spinners

My students were very engaged with this activity during purposeful play. They loved "racing" the cars to see which surface would win.

NGSSK-PS2-1
Plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object. Examples of pushes or pulls could include a string attached to an object being pulled, a person pushing an object, a person stopping a rolling ball, and two objects colliding and pushing on each other. Assessment is limited to different relative strengths or different directions, but not both at the same time. Assessment does not include non-contact pushes or pulls such as those produced by magnets.
