The New Detectives: Using Insects to Track Killers: Video Reflection Activity
This assignment is a Video Reflection of the The New Detectives: Using Insects to track Killers. This tells the story of different murder cases where entomology played a role in solving the case. These are all excellent examples for students to see the role of entomology in helping to solve crime.
“Forensic scientists work with a variety of methods (i.e. computer technology, anthropology, entomology) to solve crimes which would otherwise remain unsolved, through finding seemingly obscure clues such as tire tracks, bullet fragments and hair samples and then putting the pieces together. Interviews with forensic pathologists, cold case detectives and victims’ families show the process entailed in each case. Three separate cases are spotlighted in each episode of this series.”
This video is available on YouTube for free. The link to the video is included with the download.
Several years ago I stopped using accompanying worksheets to videos I show in class. Too many times students are more focused in answering the questions, rather than absorbing what they are watching. But, I wanted the students to be actively engaged with the video. So, I started using “Video Reflections”.
The video reflection handout has two columns on it. Student write what they have learned on the column on the left. They write down any questions they have on the column to the right. At the end of class, each student needs to tell the teacher something they learned, or a question they have.
When given a choice, most students would rather have this type of assignment, compared to a worksheet.

"This was by far the students' favorite unit. The material was easy to use and navigate. Especially since we moved to online part way through the unit." Carolyn T.
"Great resource." Parul K.
