Description

FORENSICS & DISTANCE LEARNING: PART 3 of the 3-PART lab series on FORENSIC FIBERS. This lab simulates fiber identification through the Burn Test. Students will first watch a video of someone explaining the information that can be gathered from a Burn Test. Next students will watch various fibers in the burn test and make observations. Finally 3 different cases have students refer back to their observations to identify unknown samples. It is the perfect way to introduce fiber identification so that students can later look at how they are used as evidence. Use as a stand alone lab or as part of the series.

For detailed notes on physical evidence & fibers Doodle-it! Notes, Case Studies and Tutorials from WISEflamingo are available.

The virtual lab works great during distance learning and will transition seamlessly back into the classroom for traditional learning. Need emergency sub-plans? The virtual lab can be done independently by students. It would make a great pre-lab or make up lab if students miss a physical lab during traditional learning.

Topics Covered:

INTRODUCTION TO FIBERS

-Identification of Unknown Fibers using a Burn Test

* If you are looking for more on fibers at the crime scene and fiber testing please visit the WISEflamingo Store for more resources!

I wanted to express my gratitude for your insights on teaching forensic Trace Evidence Unit to our students. Utilizing this approach has been beneficial in assessing their understanding of the concepts. However, I found it necessary to incorporate additional resources to help students grasp how to complete the assignments effectively. Thank you.

I used this lab as a make-up for students who were absent. It worked great, and it allowed them to see what they missed without me pulling out all the supplies and setting up a special make-up lab for them.

I used this as the makeup lab for our fiber lab in forensics. It took the students through the same process we used in class to determine characteristics of each type of fiber. This may have even been somewhat better than the in class lab because the results were more standardized!

This was perfect for my middle school elective. I demonstrated actually burning fibers, and they did this activity on their own.

Usually in a normal year I have my students do an investigation on fibers where they would do the burn tests themselves. This year we were not able to do that so I was so happy to find this digital activity which is so well done. I used all three parts with my students and I especially loved the three mini cases for them to solve at the end. I know in the future I can use this for students who are absent from class and probably will have students do this even if they made their own observations so they can check their data. These products are great and I do not regret purchasing these labs.
