Why Bridges Collapse: Video Reflection Activity

This assignment is a Video Reflection of a documentary into the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, Italy, collapsed and killed 43 people. The video is approximately 54 minutes long.

“On a rainy August morning in 2018, a massive section of the Morandi Bridge in Genoa, Italy, collapsed and killed 43 people. As emergency responders raced to rescue survivors, authorities began investigating the cause of the collapse. For 50 years, the iconic bridge had stood up to ever-increasing traffic, a testament to the strength of its pre-stressed concrete and cable stays. So what went wrong that fateful day?”

This video is available on YouTube for free. The link is included with the download.

Several years ago I stopped using accompanying worksheets to videos I show in class. Too many times students are more focused in answering the questions, rather than absorbing what they are watching. But, I wanted the students to be actively engaged with the video. So, I started using “Video Reflections”.

The video reflection handout has two columns on it. Student write what they have learned on the column on the left. They write down any questions they have on the column to the right. At the end of class, each student needs to tell the teacher something they learned, or a question they have.

When given a choice, most students would rather have this type of assignment, compared to a worksheet.

Buyer's Comments:

"This was an incredible start to a Forensic Engineering course for middle school, engaging and informative. Students were definitely follow along with questions." Christian T.

"This was a very good purchase! My students were forced to think of engineering in a different way. They always think of design, but rarely think about the possible failure and analysis side of engineering. Thank you for this product!" Lou Ann C.
