Formative Assessment - Scientific Models
Share

Description

In this formative assessment, students will learn about the types of scientific models in science including physical, conceptual, and mathematical models. The correct procedure for using this formative assessment is to first instruct the students that they will have 5-7 minutes to fill out the “I know” portion of their formative assessment. This is a silent activity where no discussion is taking place and it is solely based on their prior knowledge.
After the 5-7 minutes has been completed, the teacher will gather statements made by the students and place all information on the board. This should give the teacher a list of student generated ideas. These ideas will go under the “class knows” portion of their paper. Together as a class, the concept will be discovered and the student will benefit from the collective knowledge of their classmates.
From this activity, the teacher may determine to what extent of learning and depth of concept needs to be taught.

Front-loaded scientific models before we began our NGSS curriculum. Used this to gauge understanding before we moved on. Thanks!
