Description

This Fortune Telling Fish Inquiry Activity is PERFECT to do at the beginning of the school year in science! This activity is very engaging and the kids have a ton of fun with the Fortune Telling Fish!

Students will receive a Fortune Telling Fish, which is a piece of hygroscopic polymer. When the fish absorbs moisture from your palm, it responds by moving, curling, or even flipping over. But shhhh, don't tell your students that! They will make observations and try to figure out how they think it works.

It tells your "fortune" based on how it moves in your palm. For example, if the head moves only, you are jealous. If the head and tail move, it means you are in love. Each fish comes with a card explaining what your "fortune" is based on the movements.

Students will practice a lot of the scientific skills we want them to work on such as:

-making observations

-asking questions

-collecting data

-putting data into a data table

-making a bar graph with the data

-using prior knowledge

-explain their thinking in writing

-draw a model to show their thinking

-cooperative learning

This was a huge hit for all of our 5th graders! The "ooos" and "aahhs" alone was worth it! We used it for the first week of school to get students excited about science and to remind them of the scientific method. I loved that the file was editable because I did want to adjust some aspects to meet the needs of my classroom. We practiced taking data as a class and creating a bar graph to represent our data. This will be a staple lesson I'd like to use year after year!

This activity is so engaging for students, it is a great starter to the year. Kids love to experiment with the fish, and it gets everyone talking and discussing the possible explanations. It is a great way to open up scientific conversations.
