What is Response to Intervention and how do we use it in the math classroom?

Simply put, RTI is a framework for using data to inform instruction by providing appropriate resources and strategies for student learning. Each student in your classroom has different needs, and differentiating instruction based on those needs is at the heart of RTI. There are three tiers in the RTI process: 1, 2, and 3. Using the RTI process will help to ensure the development of mathematical competence, which is essential for future math learning. Tier 1 students are performing on grade level based on the standards. Tier 2 students perform below grade level and may benefit from small-group instruction. Tier 3 students test more than two years below grade level and need more intensive and possibly one-on-one or pull-out intervention. The interventions are structured in a way that you may pick and choose the lesson you need to use for pinpointing skills for individual student focus.

The Steps in the RTI process are:

⭐ Assess students on standards using pre-test.

⭐ Collect and analyze data to determine what type of intervention is needed. (remember, not all students will need Tier 2 & 3).

⭐ Track item analysis and assign students to intervention groups. This is critical to isolate what standards to focus on for each student and to know exactly what/how to focus on during each RTI session.

⭐ Place students in appropriate intervention groups and provide intervention.

⭐ Use short post-assessments to determine the need for further intervention.

⭐ The post-intervention data collected through the post-assessment is critical to tracking the progress of your students. It will help you easily show the progress (or non-progress) of students as they prepare to master the standards. The data may also be used in student data binders and for progress monitoring meetings.

The resources that are part of my Crunch Time series are structured in a way that may be used by all students in your classroom to review for the Texas year-end testing. Tier 1 Guided Practice may be used for your students who have demonstrated to be on level as a comprehensive review of each standard. It may also be used as an assessment to determine the need for further intervention. The resource includes a mini-lesson that may be used with your whole class or in small groups. Following the mini-lesson are three pages of independent practice. Independent practice should never be completed entirely independently. During independent practice, students should be monitored to check for understanding and anecdotal notes taken to determine the need for further intervention. Students who need further intervention at Tier 2 or 3 level will benefit from the Crunch Time Intervention resources for each standard.

This Texas test prep resource is part of my Crunch Time Fourth Grade Math Test Prep lie of resources. It is TEKS aligned, covering all of the fourth-grade TEKS and based on all current information published by the Texas Education Agency. Task Cards, Tier 2 & 3 Intervention, Assessments are also a part of the Crunch Time resources that will be published. Check back often to see what has been added.
