SAVE 20% BY PURCHASING THESE RESOURCES IN A BUNDLE! Set your students up for success this Winter Season with these engaging seasonal resources!

The weeks before and after winter break are very exciting for students as they look forward to, and share stories from their winter celebrations. It can be hard to find math resources that are aligned to the standards and also keep students engaged during this exciting time which is why I made these story problems. The word problems in this resource all lend themselves to visual models and are very helpful for teaching other problem-solving strategies such as labelling and finding the unknown.

The word problems in all included resources focus on whole number multiplication and division, as well as addition/subtraction and mixed-operation story problems with multiplicative compare, as well as some measurement conversion.

This BUNDLE includes:

  • Two winter seasonal & differentiated math resources
    • One Winter Plan a Snowball Social Party Project (58 pages)--digital and printable (includes Google Slides links)
    • One Differentiated Winter Math Story Problem Resource (Each page is a fun seasonal theme, and includes seasonal-themed word problems) 3 different levels and 12 questions per level--digital and printable
    • An answer key for every page.

Description of the 4th Grade Winter Math Story Problems:

Includes word problems in the following categories:

  • add to
  • take from
  • put together/take apart
  • compare
  • result unknown
  • change unknown
  • multi-step word problems
  • single-step word problems
  • equal groups multiplication
  • array multiplication
  • missing factor multiplication
  • multiplicative compare multiplication
  • division

This product includes

  • Four pages of word problems for each level (3 challenging word problems per page) (a total of 12 questions per level).
  • Each page is a fun Winter theme, and includes Winter-themed word problems
  • An answer key for every page

Levels include:

  • Single Mitten: basic problem-solving skills. Mostly single-step word problems with a few two-step problems. Addition and Subtraction within 50,000. Multiplication of four digit by one-digit numbers. Basic story problem structure with result unknown in most problems. Equal groups, multiplicative compare and array multiplication problems included. All problems can be solved using concrete visual models.
  • Double Mitten: intermediate problem-solving skills. Single and multi-step word problems. Addition and Subtraction within 100,000. Mixed word problem structure with start unknown, change unknown and result unknown as well as compare problems and missing factor multiplication and multiplicative compare. Equal groups and array multiplication problems included. Bar models , concrete visuals models as well as more abstract models can be used.

  • Snowflake: advanced problem-solving skills. Multi-step word problems. Addition and Subtraction within 100,000. Mixed word problem structures with unknown in all places as well as compare problems, most which require bar models to solve. Missing factor and division problems included. Most multi-step problems are two and three-step problems. Equal groups, multiplicative compare and array multiplication problems included. Division with two-digit divisors is introduced. Abstract visual models as well as variables should be used to solve these problems.

Description of the Plan a Snowball Social Party Project:

Aligned to standards 4.OA.A.2, 4.OA.A.3, 4.NBT.B.5, 4.NBT.B.6, 4.NF.C.7, 4.MD.A.2 & 3.MD.A.1. This is a fun and engaging project where students get to plan their own Snowball Social Party! There are 5 parts to the project including sending invitations, planning decorations, food and drink and games, as well as finding the total cost at the end. There are 21 total questions in this project, as well as a BONUS three extension pages! Some are single-step and some are multi-step problems similar to a math task.

There are 2 versions of the project, designed to be differentiated for your class and to help scaffold students towards independent problem solving.

  • Problem Solving Support: The first version includes story problem solving graphic organizers for each problem to help scaffold your students towards solving the single and multi-step story problems. This version is great for your students that need to practice fluency and need support making story problems more accessible.
  • Independent Problem Solving: The second version does not include the graphic organizers, so students need to interpret the problems themselves. This provides a more challenging opportunity for students to determine the steps to solve each problem as well as which operation to use. This is great for your students who are fluent in their facts but need to work on interpreting story problems independently.

Each version of the project includes:

  • A 21 page project (with 5 different parts, invite guests, decorations, food & drink, games and total cost). Includes a real recipe for Snow Cones and Hot Cocoa Bombs as well as fun winter game ideas!
  • 3 pages of project extensions
  • A printable and digital version of the project
  • An answer key (note: the answer key includes most answers but does not include every answer because some answers depend on student choices).

Skills included in this project are:

  • Multiplication and division fact fluency
  • Single step story problems
  • Multi-step contextual problems including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
  • Interpreting factors, products, dividends, divisors and quotients
  • Solving contextual problems involving the four operations including interpreting remainders
  • Solve contextual problems involving multiplicative comparison
  • Elapsed time problems
  • Some measurement conversion
  • Comparing decimals to hundredths

Resources open as a ZIP files and include a printable (PDF), and a digital (Power Point) version of the resource. The digital version is compatible with Google Slides (the party project includes Google Slides links).

I hope you enjoy this engaging winter math bundle!
