Description

This Fraction Exploration Number Line Activity is an interactive differentiated resource intended to help Grades 3 to 6 students better understand the following concepts:

  • Comparing Fractions
  • Relationship to fractions and Decimals
  • Picture Representations (to scaffold weaker students)
  • Mixed Numbers
  • Whole Numbers before Decimals

What You Get:

  • 40 different cards
  • Clear teacher instructions (2 pages)

PLEASE NOTE: Answers are not included as the variety of cards you give students will determine the answer.

Teachers can choose from 40 cards those cards that will help students create a number line (although that isn't explicitly mentioned to students at first. Students who require picture representations or simple fractions can be given those cards, and those students who require extension can work with mixed numbers, whole numbers before decimals, decimal numbers, and even decimals represented on a hundred grid (percentages).

How to Use This:

  • Introduction before your unit (great if admin is evaluating)
  • Quick Exit Ticket
  • Consolidation at the end of the unit rather than a test.

This higher-thinking task provides differentiation to all students and allows them to work together, and discuss their thinking. Whole-class math talk is encouraged and described.
