Description

This resource introduces fractions through multiple representations to build deep conceptual understanding. Students explore fractions on a number line, as parts of a set, through visual models, and within shapesโ€”helping them make meaningful connections across different forms.

By engaging with fractions in a variety of ways, students develop flexibility in their thinking and strengthen their ability to choose efficient strategies when solving problems. This approach supports strong mathematical practices and promotes confidence in working with fractions.

The resource also includes challenge questions for differentiation, making it ideal for extending learning or supporting intervention with upper-grade students. A quick exit ticket is included to give students an opportunity to โ€œshow what they knowโ€ and provide teachers with immediate formative assessment data.

While designed primarily for introducing fractions in 3rd grade, this resource can be effectively used with students in grades 3โ€“5 based on their individual needs and developmental levels.

Understand a fraction 1/๐˜ฃ as the quantity formed by 1 part when a whole is partitioned into ๐˜ฃ equal parts; understand a fraction ๐˜ข/๐‘ as the quantity formed by ๐˜ข parts of size 1/๐˜ฃ.
Understand a fraction as a number on the number line; represent fractions on a number line diagram.
Represent a fraction 1/๐˜ฃ on a number line diagram by defining the interval from 0 to 1 as the whole and partitioning it into ๐˜ฃ equal parts. Recognize that each part has size 1/๐˜ฃ and that the endpoint of the part based at 0 locates the number 1/๐˜ฃ on the number line.
