Description

Jump-start the new school year with a hands-on math activity that makes fractions tangible!

Fraction Mix-Up is a hands-on partner activity designed to help students master the fundamental concept of fractions as parts of a whole while getting to know each other. Each student will receive a fraction piece to decorate, either a half, a third, or a fourth. Their goal is to use these pieces to creatively assemble a complete whole by finding fellow classmates with whom they can combine pieces. Display their work creating whole circles on a bulletin board or in your math corner.

For older students, a built-in extension challenges them to use equivalent fractions to complete their whole. For example, they might use two 1/4 pieces to make a 1/2 piece.

This activity includes all necessary fraction pieces and an instructor overview with questions for discussion.
