The theme of this packet centers around animals racing to complete 1 WHOLE race. Each fraction is associated with an animal and the denominator shows how many steps the animal will take to complete the race. Example, the giraffe represents 1/3 and so the it takes the giraffe 3 steps to finish the race. All of the skills are explained and practiced around this theme. This allows students to move between a concrete concept and model and the fraction concepts.
