*Distance Learning: students can use virtual manipulatives at https://www.coolmath4kids.com/manipulatives/pattern-blocks to support them in solving this mystery!

This hands-on STEAM activity fosters perseverance and problem solving, and it comes with a FREE EXTENSION ACTIVITY!

***A band of robbers stole Theresa’s beautiful jewel pendant! They split the gems between themselves.

Detective Sherloff Homie caught the thieves, but too late! They’ve sold all the gems! Now he needs to know the value of each gem to figure out how much each robber owes Theresa.

Theresa told him that the entire pendant is worth $1,350. Each gem’s value is based on its size.

Help Sherloff Homie!***

In this super fun exploration activity, students will use fraction sense, proportional reasoning, and writing skills to solve a math mystery.

This is an inclusion friendly activity! There are several ways to solve the problem, the activity connects the abstract (fractions and symbols) to the concrete (pattern blocks), and an extension activity is included.

Enjoy!
