Bundle Description; Real World Problem Solving
Level 13
* Use Data from Tables to Generate Fractions
• Simplify / Reduce Fractions
Level 14
• Analyze Data Statements for Accuracy
• Compare Fractions with Unlike Denominators
(least, greatest, most, same, equal)
• Convert Fractions to Decimals
Level 15
• Generate Fractions from Complex Word Problems
• Analyze Data Statements for Accuracy
• Compare Fractions with Unlike Denominators
Each Level’s contents include 18 two-sided problem-solving task cards with problems on one side and answers on the other. Our cards provide the independent practice and immediate feedback needed for students to develop mastery. We recommend printing cards at each level on different colored card stock and laminating. Teachers have the option of printing cards without answers as needed.
While this program was originally developed as a comprehensive remediation program to ensure struggling learners met grade level expectations, it has been reformatted over the last ten years to meet the diverse needs of a mainstream setting. In its entirety, this program meets the state and federal mandates for differentiated instruction of SPED, ELL, and 504 students. Our scaffolded approach to instruction ensures that all students can progress at their own speed, which also allows the more advanced students to progress above grade level.
Those task cards in our program that focus on teaching concepts and skills in isolation were included to better meet the needs of struggling learners that become overwhelmed and shut down when asked to master too much learning in a single setting. Struggling learners are much more successful when allowed to focus first on mastering the basic skills and concepts in isolation and then being taught how to apply learning to problem solving applications. Over time, students often build enough skills and confidence they are able to keep up with regular lessons. This is especially true when working with students that demonstrate learning deficits in processing, reasoning, or memory. It is better that these students actually master 70% of the skills, concepts, and problem-solving applications than continue to fall farther and farther behind each year. Using this approach, the majority of our students demonstrated grade level mastery by the second year.
These task cards have proven highly effective when used as a:
Comprehensive Self-Paced Remediation Program: After having received lessons specific to their individual levels, students work problems and check their answers which are on the back of each card. In cases where a student finds an answer is not correct he/she can reference the related Review Cards for a quick independent reteach. After a student has independently answered 3 or 4 problems correctly, he / she can move on to working problems at the next level. Once students feel they have mastered a level they can request to be tested out during the next session.(Testing out on the same day as a skill is practiced / reviewed does not demonstrate mastery.)
Individualized Math Center Activity: Students can reference their Review Cards for a mini lessons and then attempt to try and solve related problems on the task cards.
Bell Ringer Games: To ensure active participation by all students, this game is best played in groups of 2 or 3. A timer is set for about 5 minutes. Each student draws a card and works their problem. When all students are finished the cards are turned over and checked. Those students that have solved their problem correctly keep the card as a point. A student that is unable to solve the problem must at least put the problem down on paper. The group must then use their Review Cards to determine what error students that were incorrect made before selecting new cards and continuing. When the timer goes off the student with the most cards wins. To make the game more interesting and increase chances of struggling learners occasionally winning, Uh-Ooh cards can be added. If a student draws one of these cards they must return all of their cars to the bottom of the stack before selecting a card with a problem to solve. Uh-Ooh cards are available for free upload.
Cards are available for purchase by individual level or as multi-level sets.
Our series of task cards collectively cover all the ESSENTRIAL skills, concepts, and problem solving strategies that should be master by 6th grade which are essential for academic success in middle school and high school. These individual task cards are part of a larger self paced remediation program specifically designed for upper grades.

note: final editting is occurring and expect to have available for purchase by December 2019
Also Available for purchase:
* Fraction Problems Solving Review Task Cards: Levels 1 - 18
Review cards make great reference notes, homework support, and test prep. With the problem on one side and step-by-step problem solving directions on the back. Students are able to practice their problem solving skills independently and parents are better able to support instruction at home.
* Fraction Problem Solving Modified Mini Lessons
All mini lessons are leveled to ensure students get opportunities to demonstrate learning in a variety of ways, which better prepares them for standardized testing. Each level comes with two skill specific worksheets with simple step by step notes in the left column. Students can easily reference these notes when working, which will increase opportunities for mastery. The larger right column provides ample opportunities for practice.
At each level, the first worksheet is designed for direct instruction by the teacher with a stated learner objective (LO), a step by step lesson, ten guided and/or independent practice sentences, and two demonstration of learning problems (DOLs) that the teacher can use to measure student understanding. The second worksheet provides homework review that directly aligns with the day’s lesson. Additional mixed review worksheets provide the essential review and reteach needed to ensure mastery. These are great for bell-ringers, sub days, and homework. As an added bonus,
Using this instructional format has allowed my struggling learners to better participate in class and demonstrate consistent growth. It has also greatly increased their willingness to complete homework assignments as these students usually struggle with processing deficits that interfere with their ability to take effective notes.
As an added bonus, I have received great feedback from parents that felt these materials provided them with an effective approach to home study and review. My English language learners did exceptionally well with this approach.
