Description
Level 17: Concepts, Skills, Problem Solving Application
• Convert improper fractions to mixed numbers
* Simplifying mixed numbers
* Modeling mixed numbers in simplest form
Each levels contents include 18 two-sided problem solving Task cards per level with problems on one side / answers on the other. Provide the independent practice and immediate feedback needed for students to develop mastery. We recommend printing cards at each level on different colored card stock and laminating. Cards can be printed without answers as needed.
While this program was originally developed to ensure struggling learners met grade level expectations, it has been reformatted over the last ten years to meet the diverse needs of struggling learners as well as gifted students in a mainstream setting. This program in its entirety also meets the mandated instructional modifications for SPED and 504 students.
Those task cards in our program that focus on teaching skills in isolation were included to meet the needs of struggling learners that become overwhelmed and shut down when asked to master too much new learning in a single setting. It is better that these students actually master 70% of skills, concepts, and related problem solving applications than master none because they were not allowed time for remediation. Struggling learners are more successful when allowed to focus on first mastering the basic skill or concept in isolation and them taught how to apply learning to problem solving situations. This is especially true when working with students that demonstrate learning deficits in processing, reasoning, or memory.
These task cards have proven highly effective when used as a:
Comprehensive Self-Paced Remediation Program: After having received lessons specific to their individual levels, students work problems and check their answers which are on the back of each card. In cases where a student finds an answer is not correct he/she can reference the related Review Cards for a quick independent reteach. After a student has independently answered 3 or 4 problems correctly, he / she can move on to working problems at the next level. Once students feel they have mastered a level they can request to be tested out during the next session.(Testing out on the same day as a skill is practiced / reviewed does not demonstrate mastery.)
Individualized Math Center Activity: Students can reference their Review Cards for a mini lessons and then attempt to try and solve related problems on the task cards.
Bell Ringer Games: To ensure active participation by all students, this game is best played in groups of 2 or 3. A timer is set for about 5 minutes. Each student draws a card and works their problem. When all students are finished the cards are turned over and checked. Those students that have solved their problem correctly keep the card as a point. A student that is unable to solve the problem must at least put the problem down on paper. The group must then use their Review Cards to determine what error students that were incorrect made before selecting new cards and continuing. When the timer goes off the student with the most cards wins. To make the game more interesting and increase chances of struggling learners occasionally winning, Uh-Ooh cards can be added. If a student draws one of these cards they must return all of their cars to the bottom of the stack before selecting a card with a problem to solve. Uh-Ooh cards are available for free upload.
Cards are available for purchase by individual level or as multi-level sets.
Our series of task cards collectively cover all the ESSENTRIAL skills, concepts, and problem solving strategies that should be master by 6th grade which are essential for academic success in middle school and high school. These individual task cards are part of a larger self paced remediation program specifically designed for upper grades.

Review cards make great reference notes, homework support, and test prep. With the problem on one side and step-by-step problem solving directions on the back. Students are able to practice their problem solving skills independently and parents are better able to support instruction at home.
* Fraction Problem Solving Modified Mini Lessons
These modified fraction mini lessons are unique because they break problem solving down into manageable chunks for struggling learners while teaching them to apply problem solving skills.
Each worksheet comes with simplified notes on the left column that the students can easily reference while working.
Contents Include:
* Two worksheets specific to each problem solving level (this
allows multiple practice for mastery and for modified homework)
* Two mixed practice worksheets included with each set purchased
These materials have proven to be an effective tool when modifying lessons for remedial students and providing mandated IEP modifications as they provide comprehensive and sequential remediation of skills, concepts, and problem solving applications.
