  • Tutoring
  • Take-home activity
  • Extension activity/early finishers
  • Test Prep game

How does this activity help students compare fractions using benchmarks

  • By comparing fractions using benchmarks, students will develop their own strategies for judging the size of a fraction.
  • The comparing fractions game lends itself to rich dialogue and countless opportunities for discovery.  You'll hear kids say things like "I know a fraction is close to one whole when the numerator and denominator are very close together" or "I put this fraction in the 'more than half' bucket because I know half is 4/8 so 5/8 would be more than half."
  • When taught effectively, students can use benchmarks to compare almost any two fractions.  By the time you teach them the method of using common denominators to compare fractions, they will already have a mental model of where the fractions fall on the number line.  Even when they use common denominators, they will be able to use benchmarks to check for reasonableness.

What grade levels is this Comparing Fractions Game intended for

This game is designed for 4th grade, but could easily be used as a review for 5th grade or any middle (or even high school math) math classroom.  I mean, be honest- have you ever taught a group of students who were just crushing it with fractions?!  Yeah, me neither…

Great value

A strong resource for building conceptual fraction understanding. Using the number line model helps students visualize magnitude and make meaningful comparisons rather than relying solely on procedures. The practice is clear, focused, and standards-aligned, making it great for review, small groups, or independent work.

Compare two fractions with different numerators and different denominators, e.g., by creating common denominators or numerators, or by comparing to a benchmark fraction such as 1/2. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual fraction model.
