Description

Put aside the fraction worksheets and get your students working together and up and moving with this Fraction Math Circle. This Math Circle is similar to the format of my Drama Circles, in which all students sit in a circle and follow the directions on their cards, with each card following another. Students must pay attention to the task because they need to watch for their turns.

This math circle follows the same premise, but students are asked to make or model different fractions in a fun way. Card scenarios ask the student to pick a number of people that are next in the circle to model the fraction – they could go clockwise or counter-clockwise, as long as they keep the same direction throughout the math circle. The Math Circle can be completed anywhere the students have a bit of space. They could make a circle in the classroom or the gym, or if the weather is nice, why not take it outside?

On these cards, students are asked to make or model different fraction concepts covering modelling fractions, equivalent fractions, and comparing fractions through greater and less than. Students are asked to work in small groups to follow and model the instructions on each card (example: Pick the next 3 people in the circle. Together, model the phrase, “three quarters of the people are doing jumping jacks”). When the students have worked together to complete the fraction model, the person with the card will read the phrase they modelled. Students will then return to their spots in the circle and the person with the following card will go next. The cards vary in difficulty to you can match the needs of your students to the tasks according to the directions on the cards.

I have also included a "teacher follow-along sheet" that summarizes all concepts to be modelled, and how they are to be modelled.
