An attempt is made to try to teach students how to organize their side work! The packet guides the students through the following concepts:

Section I: Simplify Fractions

  • Simplify fractions by dividing out common factors
  • Create Prime Factor Trees
  • Simplify fractions by dividing out common Prime Factors
  • Calculate Greatest Common Factor by multiplying common Prime Factors
  • Simplify fractions by dividing out Greatest Common Factor
  • Convert Mixed Numbers to Improper Fractions and Vice Versa

Section II: Multiply Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Section III: Divide Fractions and Mixed Numbers

Section IV: Add and Subtract Fractions with Common Denominators

Section V: Find the Least Common Multiple

  • Using a List of Multiples
  • Using Prime Factorization

Section VI: Calculate Equivalent Fractions

Section VII: Add and Subtract Fractions with Different Denominators

Section VIII: Compare Fractions

Section IX: Simplify Complex Fractions

Section X: Exponents and Order of Operations

Section XI: Add and Subtract Mixed Numbers

  • Use improper fractions
  • Add the whole numbers and fractions separately
  • A chart is provided so students can use a List of Multiples, Prime Factorization, or both methods when determining the LCD.

The zip file includes 3 PDF documents, the first being the guided notes, examples, guided problem solving, and problems plus the cover page, and the second being a duplicate of the first but with the answers filled in, plus information pages. The third document includes a variety of covers that can be used for the packet, if desired. When printing the PDF, you may want to choose the option, “Actual size”.

This worksheet packet has been a great resource for secondary education teachers, tutors, and community college professors who are teaching Prealgebra/Beginning Algebra courses. I welcome your comments and suggestions!
