Description

Description:

Engage your AP® Statistics, Statistics, or Algebra 2 students with this hands-on Frequency Distributions & Graphs Activity! Using real-world height data collected from their peers, students will gather, organize, and display data to deepen their understanding of frequency distributions and their corresponding graphs. This interactive, real-world lesson helps students connect statistical theory to authentic data while practicing precision, reasoning, and data communication skills.

Students will construct a frequency distribution and use it to create six different graphical displays:

  • Frequency Histogram
  • Frequency Polygon
  • Relative Frequency Histogram
  • Cumulative Frequency Graph (Ogive)
  • Dot Plot
  • Split Stem-and-Leaf Plot

This activity is perfect for individual practice, small-group collaboration, or an interactive classroom data lab.

What’s Included:

  • Student activity worksheet (printable PDF)
  • Teacher guide with setup, materials, and facilitation tips
  • Rubric for grading (18 points total)
  • Templates for data tables and graphs

📊 Skills Reinforced:

  • Organizing raw data into frequency distributions
  • Calculating class width, class boundaries, midpoints, relative frequency, and cumulative frequency
  • Constructing and interpreting multiple types of graphs

📚 Why Teachers Love This Activity:

  • Makes frequency distributions meaningful through real-life measurement data
  • Builds graphing fluency and reinforces vocabulary from Unit 2 Statistics
  • Promotes collaborative data collection and visual analysis
  • Ready-to-use and easy to grade with included rubric

👩‍🏫 Perfect For:

  • High school statistics classes
  • Algebra 2 Statistics Units
