Two worksheets which require students to decode a hidden message using subtraction. They are designed for subtraction practice with added interest for grades 1-3. The hidden messages also provide an opportunity for discussion about meaning. The filetype is PDF. Each worksheet might take around 5-20 minute to complete depending on students' facility with subtraction.

Coded Message 2 uses minuends from 10-30 (all multiples of 5 or 10) and subtrahends from 1-5. The hidden message is "To please herself alone the cat purrs."

Coded Message 3 uses minuends from 5-30 (all multiples of 5 or 10) and subtrahends from 1-6. The hidden message is "A picture is worth a thousand words".
