Description

This is a project-based assessment over Function Transformations best suited for the Algebra 2 student.

First, the student creates their own original function by combining 4 pieces of any of the following parent functions: linear, quadratic, absolute value, square root, cubic and cube root.

Then the student transforms their new function 5 different ways:

ยท vertical shift up or down

ยท horizontal shift right or left

ยท vertical stretch or compression

ยท horizontal stretch or compression

ยท reflection over the x- or y-axis

They rename their transformed function each time and describe the transformation. The originally created function and the 5 transformed functions are displayed on a poster board.

Specific directions and examples are included for the student (see thumbnails). Notes for the teacher, graph paper and a grading rubric are also included. 5 pages total.

This is an excellent comprehensive project over functions and transformations because in order to complete this project, the student will need to have knowledge of the 6 parent functions (listed above) including their key values and an understanding of all possible transformations (also listed above).
