Description

This Function or Not a Function Digital Activity with Self-Checking and Automatic Grading features will motivate your students as they identify each relation as a function or not. This self-checking, auto-grading Google Sheets digital activity is just what you need to give your students instant feedback so you can support their understanding of the definition of a function.

Students select "Function" or "Not a Function" from a drop-down menu. If they are correct, their answer will turn green. If they are wrong, their answer will turn red, alerting them to fix their mistake before moving on.

For each "Not a Function" answer, students will be prompted to type the ordered pair of one coordinate that could be removed to make the relation a function.

This activity includes 12 digital task cards that include multiple representations of relations.

  • 3 Mapping Diagrams
  • 3 Graphs
  • 2 Tables
  • 2 Equations
  • 2 Sets of Ordered Pairs

THREE options of Google Sheets are included:

  • Option 1: Includes a Valentine's Day themed mystery puzzle of an Iguana that says "Iguana Be Your Valentine" - perfect for increasing student engagement around the Valentine's Day holiday

  • Option 2: Includes a Winter themed mystery puzzle of a Snowman that says "Be Well Rounded" - perfect for increasing student engagement during the Winter season

  • Option 3: Does not include a mystery puzzle - perfect for any time of the year and/or for students who may benefit from less visual stimuli

A printable work-recording sheet is included:

  • Students check "Function" or "Not a Function"
  • Students justify their answer by showing work or writing an explanation
  • For each "Not a Function" answer, students also record the ordered pair of one coordinate that could be removed to make the relation a function

  • Making copies of the work-recording sheets is optional. You may also choose to save time and/or paper by either having students show their work on scrap paper or on a dry-erase board as they complete the digital activity

An answer key is included for the digital Google Sheets version AND for the printable work-recording sheet.

My students really enjoy the immediate feedback they get from the self-checking activities. These activities cover the content and in most situations are scaffolded as well. The mystery picture, game, etc. is a motivator and a bit of fun for the students to uncover.
