This freebie includes an activity using a function machine where students can learn about using function notation to evaluate a function for given values, including other variables. I have taken this concept and extended into a study of functions, and this resource is located in my store.

To extend the concept of a function, including the ideas of::
*Definition of a function
*How to identify a function based on a table of values
*Using the Vertical Line Test to identify a function based on a graph
*Definition of a one-to-one function
*How to identify a one-to-one function based on a table of values
*Using a Horizontal Line Test to decide if a function is also one-to-one
*The use of function notation
*How to evaluate a function using function notation
*A self-checking activity requiring students to evaluate various functions at specified values, including other variables
*The shapes of linear functions with a positive slope, negative slope, and a zero slope
*The shapes of quadratic functions opening up and opening down
