Functions, Domain & Range Project
Share

Description

This is a project-based assessment covering Functional Relationships, Independent/Dependent Variables and Domain/Range.

The student is given a scenario such as "Jacob charges $6 per hour to haul junk". The student is asked to determine the ind/dep variables, create a table of values, determine whether the scenario represents a functional relationship or not (they all do), determine whether the graph would be discrete or continuous, and then find the domain and range. Finally, they are asked to answer a question such as "how much would Jacob make if he hauled junk for 6 hours?"

Specific directions are included plus a complete example is given on the directions page for the student. There are 29 different scenarios so that each student can have their own. Cut scenarios up (pages 2 and 3) and place in bowl. Students can choose their scenario as they walk in the door and then get started on their project. Project can be finished in one class period. A grading rubric is also included. Run off directions (page 1) on one side and the grading rubric on back (page 4). They glue their scenario and the grading rubric to the back of their poster when they are done. Please download the preview to see a completed student example. 4 pages total.

This project can also be purchased in my Algebra Projects Bundle. There are a total of 12 Algebra Projects in this bundle - great for project based assessment!

I had my Algebra 1 students complete this project a few days before Open House so that we would have something up for parents to see. It had easy to follow instructions and the students seem to enjoy it. They were proud of their work and showed it off when their parents came to Open House.
