Description

For students bothered by a bunch of new math definitions, this is a great activity. Students will be given a real-life situation, and use objects instead of numbers and variables, before being introduced to the definitions of function, input, output, domain, and range. Students can explore this on their own, and then you can have a class discussion on pages 1-4. Then, the teacher will slowly guide students through the last 2 pages of the packet, as students are introduced to the definitions, and the different ways to represent a function. Will take a whole class period.

Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a linear function represented by a table of values and a linear function represented by an algebraic expression, determine which function has the greater rate of change.
