Description

I use this as a test for my calculus students to ensure they have the necessary skills for working with functions such as writing equations of linear functions, graphing and transforming piecewise functions, composition and finding the inverse of a function.

Because I use this with my calculus class, it is not an in depth assessment of any one concept but a general sampling of many function-related concepts. The test specifically includes the following problems:

  • 1 problem for writing the slope-intercept form of an equation given 2 points
  • 1 problem for writing the slope-intercept form of the line perpendicular to another line given a line and a point
  • 1 problem for rewriting an equation from slope-intercept form to standard form
  • 2 problems involving graphing transformations of functions (square root and rational)
  • 3 problems determining if functions are even, odd, or neither
  • 1 problem involving graphing a piecewise function (pieces are quadratic, absolute value, and cubic functions)
  • 1 problem involving writing the equation of a graphed piecewise function (pieces are linear, quadratic, and square root functions)
  • 2 problems using composition of functions to determine whether two functions are inverses of each other
  • 2 problems requiring finding the inverse of a function
  • 2 problems decomposing a given function
