Description

Make functions meaningful—not just memorized.

This 8th Grade Math resource provides SBA-style practice on functions using tables, graphs, and equations, designed to help students build conceptual understanding, not just identify answers.

Students engage in multiple choice + written reasoning, analyze common mistakes, and explain their thinking—making this a powerful tool for test prep, intervention, and daily practice.

🎯 What’s Included

✔ 5 SBA-style multiple choice problems
✔ Written reasoning prompts for every question
✔ Conceptual problem solving (not just plug-and-chug)
✔ Error analysis with student work (targets real misconceptions)
✔ Reference page for functions (tables, graphs, and equations)
✔ Complete answer key
✔ No prep required—just print and teach

🧠 Why This Resource Works

This resource goes beyond identification by helping students:

  • Understand what defines a function across multiple representations
  • Make connections between tables, graphs, and equations
  • Analyze and correct common mistakes (repeated inputs, vertical line test, rate of change)
  • Explain mathematical reasoning clearly

👉 Perfect for building the kind of thinking required on SBA-style assessments.

🏫 Perfect For

  • Bell work & warm-ups
  • SBA / SBAC test prep
  • Intervention & reteaching
  • Small group instruction

📚 Standards Alignment

Aligned to:

  • CCSS 8.F.A.1 (Define, evaluate, and compare functions)
  • CCSS 8.F.A.3 (Interpret the equation y = mx + b as defining a linear function)

💡 Teacher Notes

  • Designed for easy implementation
  • Can be used as independent practice or guided instruction
  • Encourages student discussion and mathematical reasoning

👉 Pair this with other SBA-style resources to build a full 8th grade math review system.

Understand that a function is a rule that assigns to each input exactly one output. The graph of a function is the set of ordered pairs consisting of an input and the corresponding output.
Compare properties of two functions each represented in a different way (algebraically, graphically, numerically in tables, or by verbal descriptions). For example, given a linear function represented by a table of values and a linear function represented by an algebraic expression, determine which function has the greater rate of change.
Interpret the equation 𝘺 = 𝘮𝘹 + 𝘣 as defining a linear function, whose graph is a straight line; give examples of functions that are not linear. For example, the function 𝘈 = 𝑠² giving the area of a square as a function of its side length is not linear because its graph contains the points (1,1), (2,4) and (3,9), which are not on a straight line.
