Description
This is a simulation using Punnet Squares and pedigrees and knowledge that students have gained in a genetics unit. It uses both Mendelian and Non-Mendelian Genetics. Students first will complete the genetic counselor resource assignment which helps them to understand what exactly a genetic counselor does and what their role is when advising patients. Students then go through several simulations in which they are provided a history and they must draw out pedigrees and punnet squares based on provided information and make a recommendation to the patient.
This activity really helps to assess learning. I usually ask parents and other staff to help become "patients" for a day. Students must fill out worksheets and turn them in with patient forms and they are assessed on those two things. Students must do at least one counseling role for me as the teacher.
