Description

Genetics Lab: Exploring Human Traits is a 3 page lab designed to investigate your class' genes!

Students determine the number of dominant and recessive traits for 8 human traits, such as freckles, dimples, widow's peak and the ability to taste PTC.

Students tally total # of students with each trait (dominant or recessive), and then determine ratios and frequencies.

Analysis questions are completed and a bar graph is created to show the frequencies of each trait.

Answer key is not included as answers are determined on a class basis.

I incorporated this into our genetics unit and the kids loved it! It was very cool to see them double checking with partners (like sticking out their tongues) to see if they possessed the trait. And some were bummed when/if they realized they didn't have.

Most students enjoyed learning more about human genetics and appreciated the chance to conduct research on which genetic traits were more common in our class. Some students did not want to report on their traits when I asked students to raise their hand if they showed a certain trait. This made it difficult to tally class results.
