Description

Science Google Classroom Project

This is a self-contained digital lesson that includes two parts.

Part 1: Relative Dating

The project begins with a short reading that includes information on the geologic timescale, law of superposition, fossils, and relative dating. Next, students will analyze a rock strata diagram and use what they learned about relative dating to answer 10 questions. Key included.

Part 2: Geologic Time Scale Brochure
Students will choose one geologic period and answer research questions. Once they have learned the basic facts about their time period, students will create a travel brochure. All sections are digital. However, the travel brochure can be printed and folded. Allowing students the opportunity to share the brochures adds another dimension to the learning experience.

All pages are editable - If you want to change the documents, do so prior to sharing the Google™ Slides with your students.

This resource aligns with the following Common Core and NGSS standards:

MS-ESS1-4. Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth's 4.6-billion-year-old history.

Science and Engineering Practices

Obtaining, Evaluating, and Communicating Information. Scientists and engineers must be able to communicate clearly and persuasively the ideas and methods they generate.

Common Core Standards ELA/Literacy:
RST.6-8.1. Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts.

WHST.6-8.2. Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization and analysis of relevant content.

This project is well designed and great for a child to research the time period. I wish we have more time in our content area because it would be more useful if we had more time. Looking at the cover I had hoped for more of an activity where the students could illustrate the geological timeline, but this is more in depth and looks at each time period. It was thorough and well designed though.

I loved this resource from Morpho Science! It was a perfect no-prep activity that I could assign directly through Google Classroom. The instructions were clear, and the project guided students through all the key concepts of fossils and relative dating within the geologic time scale. It was a great way for me to assess their understanding digitally.

This was so much fun for students to create and for me to grade! The various panels of factual information were easy for students to research and fill in - but it really allowed for a lot of creativity to shine through as well. 'Come see a Dino! It ain't no Rhino!'

Cite specific textual evidence to support analysis of science and technical texts.
Introduce a topic clearly, previewing what is to follow; organize ideas, concepts, and information into broader categories as appropriate to achieving purpose; include formatting (e.g., headings), graphics (e.g., charts, tables), and multimedia when useful to aiding comprehension.
NGSSMS-ESS1-4
Construct a scientific explanation based on evidence from rock strata for how the geologic time scale is used to organize Earth’s 4.6-billion-year-old history. Emphasis is on how analyses of rock formations and the fossils they contain are used to establish relative ages of major events in Earth’s history. Examples of Earth’s major events could range from being very recent (such as the last Ice Age or the earliest fossils of homo sapiens) to very old (such as the formation of Earth or the earliest evidence of life). Examples can include the formation of mountain chains and ocean basins, the evolution or extinction of particular living organisms, or significant volcanic eruptions. Assessment does not include recalling the names of specific periods or epochs and events within them.
