Description

Every student comes to your class with their own unique brand. This activity will give them a chance to show what that is! Used as a first day or week of school activity, you will learn more than ever as it provides time for students to develop interesting and quality facts, reveal their personalities and character traits WHILE incorporating geometry from the get go!

This activity does not put students on the spot with a "tell me about yourself" style icebreaker, but instead allows them to be thoughtful about what they will reveal about themselves. Students are tasked with creating a logo constructed with their choice of basic geometric elements, symmetry, and transformations. Many students are already familiar with a number of basic elements used in Geometry. This gives them a chance to recognize that, create, present about themselves and learn about their classmates. I create a logo as well and kick off the "presentation" process by introducing my logo and things about myself. We then divide into small groups and students present within those - my process for making groups is included.

On the first day of Geometry, I introduce the course briefly and then we watch a video called "The 10 most iconic logos of all time". We discuss where we see Geometry. Students are then presented with the task of making a logo that uses Geometry and also lets us know some things about them.

INCLUDED:

- Project description

- Link to recommended video

- List of geometric elements students are familiar with

- Lesson notes

- Student project examples

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Use geometric shapes, their measures, and their properties to describe objects (e.g., modeling a tree trunk or a human torso as a cylinder).
Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with typographic grid systems based on ratios).
