Description

Explore geometry transformations with our no prep, easy to check Polybius Square Activity! This engaging resource is ideal for practicing graphing rigid motions (translations, reflections, and rotations).  Students will love uncovering the Code Phrase while gaining a solid grasp of transformations, making geometry both educational and entertaining!

How does this Polybius Square activity work?

Students will perform 12 different rigid transformations.  They will then use each of their coordinate answers to find a letter on the Polybius Square.  All 12 letters will spell out the code phrase…making this activity super easy to check!

When to use this activity:

  • At the end of your lesson on this topic
  • In the days after you teach the lesson on this topic, as a way to review
  • In preparation for a Unit Exam or Midterm or Final that will include this topic
  • As a substitute lesson plan

This activity includes 12 problems:

Translations:

  • written description
  • mapping rule
  • vector

Reflections:

  • x-axis
  • y-axis
  • x=#
  • y=#
  • y=x
  • point

Rotations:

  • 180°
  • 90° clockwise
  • 90° counterclockwise

The downloadable PDF includes:

Standards

to see state-specific standards (only available in the US).
Represent transformations in the plane using, e.g., transparencies and geometry software; describe transformations as functions that take points in the plane as inputs and give other points as outputs. Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that do not (e.g., translation versus horizontal stretch).
Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw the transformed figure using, e.g., graph paper, tracing paper, or geometry software. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another.
Use geometric descriptions of rigid motions to transform figures and to predict the effect of a given rigid motion on a given figure; given two figures, use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to decide if they are congruent.
