Description
In this dice activity, students will simulate 50 years on Earth. Their goal? To escape Global Warming! Rolling dice for each year, students will go through each decade, experiencing different factors of greenhouse gas emissions. These factors include energy, transportation, manufacturing, agriculture, and population--each represented by numbers on the dice.
Students start with emissions data from 1970, and as they roll the dice, increases in these factors will happen, as well as increase in average global temperature. The more impactful factors such as energy and transportation will do more damage!
As students run this simulation, they will gather data on the increases in emissions, temperature increase, and total population. When the 5 decades are over, they will make a multiple line graph showing the changes in these factors over time. Comprehension questions are included that require students to reflect on their data and why it looks the way it does. This activity is perfect for middle school students who already have an understanding of climate, natural resources, and fossil fuels. An answer key is included. Enjoy!
