Description

This Goal Setting Lesson for High School Students helps high school counselors engage their teen students with goal setting, problem-solving, and belief in their own abilities. This resource can be used as a classroom lesson or a "lunch and learn" lesson series. Students will focus on SMART goal setting, overcoming barriers, establishing accountability, recognizing self-talk, and putting actions to their words. An additional facilitator guide is included for extra questions for parenting and pregnant teen students.

Students will be able to analyze the influence of their family and peers on their goals, consider their own decision-making skills as they establish their short and long-term goals, and hone in on their self-management skills. Great value
I set goals with students multiple times a year and this is helpful and more interesting than just writing on a piece of notebook paper

This is my first year teaching anything at high school level, and first time teaching a learning strategies class. This lesson not only gave me excellent teaching ideas, but the slideshow was engaging for high school both in appearance and in content. Thank you so much for this material!

I used this for a "Lunch & Learn" with a group of pregnant and parenting teen moms. The additional questions specific for this population were super helpful and I wove them into the powerpoint to keep the presentation more discussion-based instead of me just making a presentation. The focus of our Lunch & Learns is more relationship building-based, and this was a great tool to use to both teach and empower while keeping it interactive and giving us a chance to learn more about each of their individual personalities. I highly recommend this resource :)

I do like the Goal setting material, but I wish there were more resources added for road blocks. It could've been the five steps to problem solving, or something to tackle road blocks after identify them. Sure positive self talk is great, but I feel there could've been a lot more especially if I am paying 8 whole dollars on my counselors salary :/.

Hi Kanwal— Thank you for your valuable feedback! I hope you also saw the lesson plan, two follow-up activities, and additional questions for parenting and pregnant students. My intention with the slides was to start a conversation and introduce the topic and not be the focus of the entire activity. I’d love to continue this conversation via email to see what other thoughts you have to add value to this resource- lauren@counselorclique.com.
