Description
This is a unit I made for my 2nd graders. There are several types of word problems meeting Common Core Standard 2.OA.A.1.
I have converted it over to Google Classroom so it can be easily sent from you to your students and then back to you to grade!
The Part Part Whole Method involves seeing numbers as being made of two or more parts. When students understand this model it has shown to increase understanding of work with place value, number concepts, and word problems.
Students first come to an understanding of what the "whole is". Then, they must observe whether something is being added (addition) to the whole or taken away (subtraction) from the whole.
My students really enjoyed reading the problems closely and discovering whether it would be an addition or subtraction problem!
In this product you will receive:
{{{28 Word Problem Task Cards!}}}
- 7 Task cards containing word problems with addition & subtraction mixed
- 7 Google Slides Task cards containing addition word problems
{Example : There were 53 swimmers in the ocean. 34 more swimmers came into the ocean. How many swimmers were in the ocean altogether?}
-7 Google Slides Task cards in which one of the "Parts" is missing.
{Example: Phillip made some paw prints in the snow in the morning. He made 42 more paw prints in the evening. How many paw prints did Phillip make in the morning?}
-7 Google Slides Task cards containing subtraction word problems
{ Example: Atticus had 65 marbles. He gave 34 of them away. How many marbles does Atticus have now?}
- 2 addition activity pages with 4 word problems on each that can be used as Entrance/ Exit tickets or however you prefer. The diagram (which can be seen in my preview) is included beside each one of these word problems.
I have included the ANSWER KEY for easy grading! : )
I found that in my classroom, the Part Part Whole diagram made it much easier for students to discern how to solve these tricky word problems! They really enjoyed working as partners to solve them as well.
I hope your students enjoy these activities as much as mine did! :)
Your feedback is always appreciated and helps you earn TPT credits for future purchases!
