This guide may also work well as a sub plan for your substitute teacher. The multiple choice questions have also worked well with my ESL students.
PART 1 – Comprehension questions in chronological order. I have made two sets for differentiation. The multiple choice questions may also work well with ESL/ELL students. Answer keys included.
- 30 multiple choice questions with 3 possible answers.
- 30 questions requiring full sentence answers.
PART 2 – Storyboard and synopsis
- Students to create a 9-scene storyboard, illustrating pivotal events from the movie. Each scene should include a short description explaining the main idea it represents. Use the movie questions to guide sequencing.
- Using their storyboards as guides, students to write a synopsis of the movie.
PART 3 – Creativity and Essay writing
- The first section is for students to imagine R. L. Stine is asking them for inspiration in creating a new monster for one of his books. Students to complete a profile for a new monster including a visual representation.
- The second section is for students to imagine R. L Stine was so impressed with their monster that he used it in one of his books. Students go on to write a book review as though they have read the book which included their monster.
- The third section is for the student to write a recount for one of the following characters: Zach, Hannah, Champ, R. L. Stine or Slappy. They start from the moment the first book is opened.
Based on the children's horror book series of the same name, this movie is about a teenager named Zach who befriends the daughter of Goosebumps author R. L. Stine, who is imprisoned within his own wild imagination as his creations are actually real live monsters. Zach unwillingly releases one of the monsters. Now it's up to Stine, Zach and Hannah to send the monsters back. This is rated PG, you can get a free editable permission slip here.

How can movies help students learn English and be educational?
Movies can be used as a follow on from a novel study

- This gives the student the ability to interpret the language in full visual context. To see such visual supports as facial expressions and gestures simultaneously.
Variety and flexibility
- Movies can also act as a springboard for follow-up tasks such as discussions, debates on social issues, role plays, reconstructing a dialogue or summarizing.
