Description

Many of the expectations at the Grade 1 level require students to show their understanding using concrete materials. Most of these expectations cannot be assessed with paper and pencil tests or worksheets. The {Grade 1} One-on-One Math Strand Assessments packet is designed to provide 26 student-teacher assessments that have students explain and show their understanding to the teacher in an one-on-one setting.

Q: What resources are provided in this packet?

In this packet you will find assessment records (explained below), and materials used in the absence of manipulative. Some examples of the materials included are:

  • Numbers to 50;
  • Decomposing number cube trains;
  • Counting coin strips;
  • Coin posters;
  • Pattern strips;
  • Pictographs;

These items are "printables" and the majority are presented in both black-and-white as well as color. Since there are 26 assessments included in this resource, you can essentially complete one assessment every other week for the school year, or spiral the assessments and ensure that students are continuously reviewing and using skills they have learned throughout the year.

Please note that the majority of the pages in this packet are printable tools to use for each assessment. You do not need to print all of these tools if you have your own in your classroom to use.

You will also need other manipulatives in order to complete some of the assessments. Among the manipulative you will need are: linking cubes, square tiles, counting bears, buttons, pom poms, paper clips and so on. The materials needed are specified in each of the assessment descriptions.

Q: How are the assessments completed?

To complete each of the assessments you are asked to pull students aside, one at a time, and ask them questions related to a given math expectation, or complete a quick hands-on activity that shows their understanding of the given expectation. The assessment records with "look for" comments based on the language in the Ontario curriculum document are provided along the top columns of the assessment record. Students are assessed based on each of the given look-for's using a 1 - 4 levelling scale.

Q: What are the strands assessed?

There are 5 strands assessed in this packet. Each strand is broken down into key concepts, or expectations. The strands that are assessed are: Number Sense and Numeration, Measurement, Geometry and Spatial Sense, Patterning and Algebra, and Data Management and Probability.

Q: Can I see a sample of some of the assessments?

There is a lengthy (40+ page) preview of this packet shown using the "Preview this Product" function. Please be sure to check out this preview to ensure that the product is right for you.

Great value
I love these quick assessments that are easy to print and go! In grade 1 if you really want to get a sense of what your students know you have to do one on one assessments but it can feel daunting to organize and then take the time to do it. These assessments are easy to prep - you basically print off the task sheets and use some manipulatives you already have. The checklists make it easy to record what you can quickly assess in a few minutes per student. So helpful!
