Description

This product doubles as full digital lessons for the Concept Development portion of Grade 1 Eureka Math and also includes independent practice slides after each lesson. No prep-work needed for over 2 weeks of math lessons with nearly 800 slides bundled at a big discounted rate! These lessons support CCSS Operations and Algebraic Thinking (particularly CCSS.1.OA.1, CCSS.1.OA.2, CCSS.1.OA.3, and CCSS.1.OA.5) as well as Standard Mathematical Practices (particularly MP1, MP3, MP7 and MP8). It is designed for early first grade (particularly Module 2 Topic A Lessons 1-11 for Eureka) but can also be used for second half of kindergarten to supplement or enhance other curriculums as it focuses on the same standards. It can also serve as a great review for second grade.

This entire product line doubles as an interactive Google Slide digital lessons for the Concept Development portion Engage New York Eureka program to be displayed on your Smart Board or shared on your screen and also contains interactive Google slides for independent or small group practice after the whole group lessons to be assigned or shared virtually to put the lesson into practice.

In Topic A, students solve word problems with three addends (1.OA.2) and move toward the strategy of making a ten. With problems that always include at least two numbers that yield 10 when added together, Lesson 1 encourages students to use the associative and commutative properties as they set up and read equations in various ways. The stories begin with fantasy settings: in outer space, on a pirate ship, in Candy World, etc. Each lesson has fun, engaging stories that promote discourse and encourage students to try on their own. Students then get ample practice where an addend is 9 to make a 10 and following that addends of 7 and 8. . This triad of lessons takes students through a concrete–pictorial–abstract progression as they work with physical 5-groups using objects, 5-group drawings, and finally number bonds. Lesson 6 reminds students of the commutative property again, by focusing them on when and why they might apply commutativity: to compose ten from the larger addend. Lessons 7, 8, and 9 mirror the earlier set of three lessons, but students decompose one addend to make ten with 8 as they key addend. This extensive practice allows students to internalize both why and how they would compose ten from the larger addend as they come to realize that this is an efficient strategy. Students use the make ten strategy with 5-group drawings and number bonds to solve a variety of problems involving a mixture of 7, 8, or 9 as addends in Lesson 10. This gives students an opportunity to not only practice their newly discovered strategies, but it also allows them to generalize this make ten strategy to a new number: 7. It is important to note that students can continue to use counting on as a strategy throughout this entire Topic A, although many students will begin to use the make ten strategy more and more as they continually discuss addition strategies and efficiency with one another. Topic A ends with Lesson 11, where students solve story problems with two addends (1.OA.1), using independently selected methods. With students given the opportunity to critique the work of turkeys who are competing for pumpkin pie, they will have a chance to demonstrate their comprehension of the objectives of this module.

.Use these lessons as whole group shared on your Interactive whiteboard, shared on your screen on Google Meet or Zoom for distant learning, or as a small group lesson in present mode as a visual while teaching. Students will follow along using their individual whiteboards or notebooks. Each slide is annotated with dialogue in speech bubbles to guide your lesson, but feel free to make it your own! Each slide is designed to serve as a foundation for which math discourse in the classroom can build and grow.

After the lessons are the independent slides for students. You can assign these slides in Google Classroom or on Seesaw (or any other program that supports Google slide products). Simply hold "ctrl" to select the slides you want to assign, go to file and make a copy. From there you can assign as you normally would on your preferred digital platform. These slides are interactive when in edit mode only! If you have any questions, please feel free to ask here or you can email me (see my TOU below for contact information).

My students love these but lesson 10 has a mistake. It has the wrong answer. The problem is 8+4 but when making 10 they changed it to 10+4 instead of 10+2 and have the answer as 14 rather than 12.
