Grade 3 EngageNY Math Module 1 Parent's Guide to the New Math
Share

Description

Are your students' parents struggling to help their children with the EngageNy Module 1 math homework? Mine were. So I created this Parent's Guide to the New Math for Module 1. This guide explains what arrays, number bonds and tape diagrams are. It provides examples and explanations of each to help parents understand what is being taught in the classroom so they can help their child at home. If you purchase this guide, you may wish to alter it a bit to match your teaching style and lingo. For example, in my class we refer to the known and unknown information in a word problem as the K and the UK. Feel free to change the wording and make it your own.

Instead of taking a lot of time to create my own guide, I purchased this one to share with my parents during conferences. Many parents are unable to help their children with Engage NY homework and this guide helps them to better understand what their children are learning.

Interpret products of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 5 × 7 as the total number of objects in 5 groups of 7 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a total number of objects can be expressed as 5 × 7.
Interpret whole-number quotients of whole numbers, e.g., interpret 56 ÷ 8 as the number of objects in each share when 56 objects are partitioned equally into 8 shares, or as a number of shares when 56 objects are partitioned into equal shares of 8 objects each. For example, describe a context in which a number of shares or a number of groups can be expressed as 56 ÷ 8.
Use multiplication and division within 100 to solve word problems in situations involving equal groups, arrays, and measurement quantities, e.g., by using drawings and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
