Description
The three-part math lesson is a highly effective teaching strategy that enhances student understanding and engagement. It begins with a "Minds On" phase to activate prior knowledge and set the stage for new learning. This is followed by the "Action" phase, where students engage in problem-solving and explore new concepts through hands-on activities and collaboration. The lesson concludes with a "Consolidation" phase, allowing students to reflect, discuss, and solidify their understanding. This structured approach fosters deeper comprehension, critical thinking, and meaningful learning experiences.
This Geometry unit consists of 61 Google Slides of in-class work, each lesson beginning with a Minds On prompt (intended for whole class discussion), followed by an Action task rooted in problem solving (I usually do this with random pairings), wrapping up with a Consolidation piece as a whole class to solidify student understanding and honour different approaches to the task. The subjects and skills covered are as follows :
representing variables in expressions and equations
- equilateral, scalene, and isosceles triangles
- classifying acute, obtuse, and right angles
- measuring angles
- drawing angles
- finding the missing angle in a triangle
- constructing triangles based on side lengths and angles
- congruent shapes
- top, front, and side views
- plotting coordinates on the Cartesian plane
- reflections, translations, and rotations
Each three part lesson is accompanied by an individual component for students to complete in class or for homework. These 47 pages build upon the content covered in class and are an essential piece in helping parents to see and support their child's learning.
All of this concludes with a unit review intended for use as a study guide, followed by a unit test that includes the skills under study. Answer keys included for easy assessment!
